CHARACTERISTICS
In steam distillation, steam passes through the plant material, where it “picks up” many of the plant's volatile aromatic compounds. The steam then passes through a condenser (where it is cooled), and returns to being a liquid composed of a mixture of “oil” and “water”. Due to the difference in density, the two quickly separate, giving the essential oil (which almost always floats to the surface), and an aqueous product that contains micronized essential oil droplets suspended in water – the hydrosol!
HOW TO USE
Hydrolates can be used directly on the skin, body or hair, without the need for dilution. Alternatively, they can be applied by spraying a cotton pad.
